Many internet marketers think they’ve come up with some great new idea for what they think will be a hot niche but later learn that it’s already been done too many times. It can get discouraging, and that’s the reason why many aspiring niche marketers give up. Market saturation does exist, but you can’t give up simply because you have got some competition. Study Your Competition Closely

Study your competitors as soon as you identify them. Guage their websites for content and visual appeal. Before looking around too much, make a note of your first impressions. Are your competitors’ sites appealing? If this is the case, what makes them that way? If not, how come? Is one of them overloaded with graphics that make it slow to load? What is the content like? Is the first thing you see an extensive list of adverts, or do you only notice the advertisements after you start reading? Ask a couple of your family members or friends to have a look at some of your competitors’ sites and then get their impressions on what they find appealing and what turns them off.

Identify Your Competitors’ Mistakes

Make some notes on what kinds of things you’re feeling your competitors are doing wrong. The site might be uninteresting, there might not be enough content, it could be having lots of spelling or grammar mistakes, there could be too many adverts, or it could be something else. You do not need any special expertise to know what about a site makes you want to leave. Your marketing will be targeted at people just like you – consumers.

Identify What Your Competitors Are Doing Right

Next, make some notes on what kind of things you feel your competitors are doing right. Were you so absorbed by the site’s content – or even by just having a look at the site – that you forgot you were researching your competitors? If that happened, it’s a strong signal that your competitors are getting something right. Is the sight visually attractive? How is it laid out? Do the advertisements almost blend right into the site and its content? Is the content fresh and does it keep your interest? Never copy anything you see, but this kind of research can prevent you from making some of the most typical mistakes of new niche marketers. It can also help you understand what types of things will draw visitors to your websites.

Look at Your Competition’s Affiliate Products

Look at the products your competitors are promoting. Do they fit well in the niche? What companies are these products associated with? Taking a look at these products can help you understand the products other sites and blogs in your niche are selling, although there is no reason to assume that they’re good products or your competitors are having any success promoting them.

It is possible to learn a great deal from studying your competitors and how they run their niche marketing businesses. The market within a particular niche could be saturated. But you might also learn that your website is desperately required because there aren’t enough good sites or blogs in your niche.
